Dear Lucas

Dear Lucas,

You are a great joy to be around.  You have melted the hearts of anyone that sees your smile. You are very chatty and happy nearly all the time.  Daddy and I are so blessed to be your parents.  I've tried to soak up every moment with you, no matter what hour of the day ...or night.  I remember a few times in your earlier months when you had some extra fussy days, and I remember telling myself to still enjoy walking, rocking, and soothing you even if you still kept crying. I knew it wasn't going to last, and I'd miss these days. And here you are, 6 months old, and I'm so glad I opted to cherish each moment so far ...even the cries and middle night feeds. I have loved you so much, ever since seeing the two pink lines on the pregnancy test, you have filled my heart with joy.

So, happy half year birthday to my baby boy who loves to 'talk' to everyone, your toys, your hands, and even the colorful shirt sleeve of the doctor you saw a few days ago. Ever since you were born, you have brought more smiles to our faces. Your brothers love you so much too, right from the very start. They play with you and when you smile, laugh, or reach out to touch their faces, it just makes their day! Making you happy, makes them  happy.

Here's a recap of highlights from your 1st six months ...

July 24, 2013, you were scheduled to be born at 2:30pm, but my OB was running a bit behind. You were born at 3:22 pm, tipping the scales at 7 lbs, 8 oz and 19 inches long. Your hands, feet, and head were pretty big, lol.  Right then, you were no longer "Baby Tres", but Lucas. The weather on your birthday was beautiful! Temps in the upper 80's and sunny. You were my only baby to breastfeed. And I was thrilled to finally have one of my babies latch so well.  Unfortunately I was sick on day #2 in the hospital and was unable to feed you, and once you had that first bottle, you refused to latch again. It was only disappointing for a few minutes. I loved you too much to dwell on such a minor detail as latching. You were healthy and that is all I cared about.

Your first 6 weeks we spent trying to get your diaper rash under control. After trying several things and doctor visits, what finally worked was Crisco for the 'diaper cream' and toilet paper for 'wipes'.  The most crazy thing we tried was rubbing Maalox on your butt then blow drying it with my hairdryer.  Yeah ... we only did this for a couple of days. It felt ridiculous and didn't work anyway.  We tried a few different diapers as well, and discovered the only one your booty likes is Pampers Swaddlers.

Month #1 highlights - Your cord (finally!) fell off at 2 weeks, 4 days old. It sure did hang on for dear life, haha.  Places you went were church, the mall, MeMe & PopPop's house, your Aunt & Uncles's house, Target, and O'Charlies for mine, and Daddy's 8 year anniversary.

Month #2 highlights - You started sleeping through the night at 10 weeks old!!  We were quite impressed with this accomplishment.  This month, you discovered that toys are fun!  You started to hitting and kicking while playing in your bouncy seat and the floor mat.  You also started to laugh out loud. We love to hear you laugh!  You would also give us big gummy smiles whenever we talked to you. <3

Month #3 highlights - Right on your 3 month birthday, October 24th, you grabbed a toy for the first time. You had your first holiday this month too, Halloween! You dressed up as a skeleton just like your brothers. Special places you visited - the pumpkin patch!

Month #4 highlights - Starting this month, you would fuss for your paci in the middle of the night, but then keep on sleeping til morning. I don't mind waking for a few seconds to help get that paci in your mouth. It just meant I got a little more time with you. Still, trying to soak up and enjoy each moment. Soon, you will move out of my room and into your own room. And I will miss having you by my bedside.  And speaking of bed, this month you started half rolling and turning in your bed. I'd find you sleeping in all kinds of different angles.  Some special memories would be of you starting to try holding your own bottle, and reaching up when you wanted to be held.  This month, you also visited Santa at Bass Pro Shops, and you did great!

Month #5 highlights - You finally graduated from drinking 4 ounce bottles every three hours, to drinking 5 ounce bottles every 3 hours. You also had your very first spoon feeding of rice cereal on Christmas Day, and sat up alone for about 10 seconds! You said "MaNa" and "Da Dee" this month, and made us so happy to hear your babble begin to sound like real words. You have discovered it's fun to stick your tongue out and blow strawberries. You haven't done this with food in your mouth ... yet.  You also learned how to wave hello to those who come and say hi to you. You love to play in your exersaucer! And you had a very special first visit to your Great Grandma Peggy's house in northern VA. A special memory this month is, it snowed ..twice! Your first snow. :)

This next chapter of your life has yet to be written, and yet to be photographed. I'm looking forward to watching you make new discoveries and bragging about them in your baby book.  :)

Love always,

Mommy
